Dropping a New Album in the Era of Online Streaming

As services such as Pandora and Spotify are becoming popularized, the music industry has taken a step back to survey the potential damage. Big artists like Beyonce and Taylor Swift have chosen to keep their albums from being available to stream, blaming the decline in music industry sales on streaming services. But what does that mean for newer artists who don’t have a large-scale marketing team to project an album to the top? Regardless of the fact that “artists make considerably less money when a fan listens to a track on Spotify rather than buying a track outright…the streaming service says that as it achieves scale it will be able to pay artists even more than they’re able to earn selling discrete units.”

For smaller bands, services like Spotify are able to present artists to a greater target audience and integrate them into playlists that are featured on the “browse” section. What’s your stance on the debate? Moving forward, should all artists aim to release their albums on streaming service? Or should art be reserved for those who see the value and rarity of a certain piece of music and therefore pay for it individually, as Swift suggests?
