Reasons Why You’re Not As Successful as You Should Be

YOU’RE NOT NETWORKING. Don’t roll your eyes now. We know you’re an artist and we know you’re not a fake but who says you should kiss ass when you’re networking? Networking simply means making good relationships with people. Although it helps that you hand out really awesome business cards at a party but good networking goes beyond that. You should be able to tell people how you can be useful for each other all the while establishing genuine connections. Don’t fake it. People can tell.

YOU’RE NOT HUSTLING ENOUGH. This is pretty plain and simple. You’re not working as you hard as you should be. If it’s not Facebook’s fault, it’s probably your time spent at the bar every night. And oh, we’re not just talking about the actual time you’re clocking in the hours whether you should be marketing or practicing or doing your actual gig, we mean productivity. If you’re having a tough time managing yourself, maybe you need these productivity tips.

YOU DON’T HAVE A MENTOR/ ADVISER. Mentors are not just for fresh grads. For as long as you think you can learn something from someone whom you admire career-wise, you can still be an apprentice. Go ahead and think of someone that can guide you. Do not be afraid of approaching people because they’re more welcoming than you might initially imagine.

YOU’RE NOT MARKETING YOURSELF. How’s your personal website? Oh, you don’t have any. How’s your Facebook page then? 210 Likes, huh? Your linked in? Your Twitter? Your newsletter? Your website? What? No website? No wonder you’re not too satisfied with how things are going. Yes, online presence is very important nowadays to any career and especially to careers that are related to the arts.

YOU’RE NOT MARKETING YOUR PRODUCTS. Aside from marketing yourself and your band, you must know how to market your products well. If you’re a musician, you should know whether you should sell your music via creative CDs, drop cards, vinyl records, or USB flash drives (note: you can sell in more than one medium, whichever you think works!). You should also know what kind of marketing tools work best for you (posters, Facebook ads, Twitter, coupons, contests), what venues you should go to, and all the other nitty gritty work of really marketing your products effectively.
