Six Thing to Avoid For a Better Singing Voice

If you sing for a living or you just love to preserve your lovely voice, here are the things you should avoid. All of the things listed below are almost impossible to avoid completely so the next best thing is to monitor and keep them in moderation. Good Luck!;-)

Stay away from milky drinks such as err…milk. You don’t want anything slimy to stick to your vocal cords during a performance as this could affect the quality of your voice. Water is your best friend during those times as it thins your mucus and cleanses your cords. Stay away from milk, flavored drinks, and acidic drinks (lemonade) three days prior to your gig. Check out this list of foods to avoid.

Stay away from alcohol. Ouch! This is a tall order. But alcohol causes constriction in the blood vessels in vocal tissue which causes a reduction in vocal control.

Stop talking! Yeah it’s impossible not to talk nonstop especially during tours but please remember you’re touring to perform and your instrument is your vocal cords. Don’t wear it out. Let the drummer and the triangle player do their yakkity yak til the wee hours of the morning. They can still play well without their voice.

And of course, Don’t Smoke. First, no drinkin, then no talking, and now no smoking? Not trying to convert you into a monk here but it’s just that smoke is an irritant so no can do. If you smoke a lot, your vocal cords would swell. At the very least, limit your consumption. Sisha, cigars, pot…no nuthin if you love your voice.

Quit that Throat Clearing Habit. If you’re one of those annoying folks who keep clearing their throats out of habit, quit it now. Number one, it can damage your cords (surprise!) and number two, it’s -as I’ve said, annoying. If you feel the urge to clear your throat ever so often, consult your EENT specialist. If you can’t help it, try sipping warm water with ginger to clear your throat from phlegm.

Don’t Stop Movin. Aerobic exercise is a must for singers. Make it a point to jog or run on the treadmill at least twice a week. If you’re out and about, bring a jumping rope. You need to exercise your lungs and develop your upper body and diaphragm. Watch your weight, too.
