Which is it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music is dying if you believe the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).<\/p>\n<p>Music is a growing business if you believe Apple, Google, Spotify, Yahoo Music, Artist Direct, My Space Music, Pandora and hundreds of other options.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re right &#8211; all of them.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;good ol days&#8217; are gone.<\/p>\n<p>Everything lives in phases &#8211; music is no different:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a08-tracks had their peak in &#8217;78 of $3.1 B according to the RIAA<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0LPs had their peak in &#8217;78 of $8.1B<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/products\/custom-cassette\">Custom Cassettes<\/a> had their peak in &#8217;88 of $6.1B<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0CDs peaked in 99 with $16.4B<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Albums began their rise with downloads of $1B in 2010<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Singles jumped out with downloads of $1.6B in 2010<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mobile &#8216;sales&#8217; is going to be\u00a0<strong><em>huge<\/em><\/strong> but-.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Warner Music is up for grabs but the buzzards see a feast in the carcass- a library that&#8217;s worth gazillions.<\/p>\n<p>Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens were killed in a plane crash in &#8217;59 and everyone called it the day the music died.<\/p>\n<p>For Elvis fans there was a similar feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Same when John Lennon was killed-or El Shaka-or Selena<\/p>\n<p>Eras ended, but music survived.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the royalties to their estates and older artists may have been reborn with the Eminem&#8217;s decision against Universal that digital sales are licensed royalties not out-in-out sales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The New Beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the industry (RIAA) is trying to revive its collective income, the ruling made them step back a little.<\/p>\n<p>Buddy commented,\u00a0<em>&#8216;I have never, ever-it feels funny to me.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Worldwide revenues remain strong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7942\" title=\"music-industry-statistics\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics.jpg\" alt=\"music-industry-statistics-revenues\" width=\"493\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics.jpg 493w, https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes But\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>The music industry reluctantly admits that music sales &#8221; of all types &#8221; continues to rise but the old way of stamping a disc, shrink-wrapping it and sending it to the store is dwindling.\u00a0\u00a0The RIAA members just can&#8217;t figure out how they&#8217;re going to make the same amount on the digital sales and streaming music.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Source &#8211; eMarketer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true, the guys aren&#8217;t stamping out, shrink wrapping, shipping as many albums, but the music plays on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7943\" title=\"music-industry-statistics-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-statistics-2-520x231.jpg\" alt=\"music-industry-statistics-revenues-2\" width=\"520\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tracking the Mix\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>While physical media sales continue to drop, single and album sales have begun to level off to a more modest\/realistic growth.\u00a0\u00a0The newest opportunity, mobile music, is still trying to gain its foothold.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Source &#8211; eMarketer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How else would the labels have the money to chase down and shut down all those bad kids?<\/p>\n<p>When the RIAA got the courts to shut down Limewire in October of last year &#8212; the largest P2P site &#8212; file-sharing dropped like a rock.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Elena emphasized,\u00a0<em>&#8216;<\/em><em>My aunt is very conscious of these things.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>NPD noted that the site was so popular for so long that when it disappeared people just figured that was the end of the free stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, hard-core freeloaders still hang out at sites like Frostwire and Bittorrent; but they&#8217;d work at getting it for nothing, no matter how little you charged.<\/p>\n<p>Normal humans moved on to other methods of getting\/listening to music.<\/p>\n<p>Digital sales were up a paltry one percent in 2010, but music sales overall were down 2.4 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changing Appetites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are people giving up music?<\/p>\n<p>Home audio sales are up &#8211; nearly every car is sold with a radio &#8211; portable speakers are up &#8211; Skullcandy and Bose are enjoying great headphone, earbud sales.<\/p>\n<p>In addition:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0150.2 mln Flash-equipped MP3 players will be sold this year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a070.9 mln Americans will have phones with music capability by year-end<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a072% of online Americans listen to music on their PCs<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Asia Pacific music market will generate $12.2 bln this year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0EMEA satellite radio subscriptions will generate $30.1 bln this year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0PMP\/MP3 player market will grow to 275 mln units this year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The top music retailers last year: Wal-Mart, iTunes, Amazon, Target, Best Buy<\/p>\n<p>Digital music really is universal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-stats.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7944\" title=\"music-industry-stats\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-industry-stats-478x530.jpg\" alt=\"music-industry-stats\" width=\"478\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Balancing Act\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>While their choice of listening device might vary from country to country, people all have the same desire to listen to music to make their day go better.\u00a0\u00a0But online or mobile, it&#8217;s still music.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Source\u00a0&#8211; International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course our kid won&#8217;t rip the 4K + CDs we no longer play.\u00a0\u00a0Not because it&#8217;s &#8216;illegal&#8217; (does that stop a kid?) but<em>, &#8216;OMG, you know how long that would take me?&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The little ingrate!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Changelings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the times have again changed.<\/p>\n<p>We find ourselves listening to iNet radio.<\/p>\n<p>People around the globe go online and listen to web radio or online services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-stats-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7946\" title=\"music-stats-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-stats-2-345x530.jpg\" alt=\"music-industry-stats-2\" width=\"345\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Web-centric Music\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>Whether it&#8217;s Pandora, I Heart Radio, Rhapsody or Yahoo! Music, people are able to use the Internet to enjoy the specific genre of music they prefer and enjoy.\u00a0\u00a0Often it is music that suits their mood, feelings at that specific time.\u00a0<strong>Source\u00a0&#8211; Vision Critical<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of our kids uses her iPod Touch to text, download\/store\/enjoy music.<\/p>\n<p>She can store her stuff in Apple&#8217;s cloud but keeps most of her music on her device.\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, playing that music on something else is impossible because Apple uses the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format.<\/p>\n<p>The others can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Of course Apple devices can play &#8216;their&#8217;\u00a0<strong><em>open<\/em><\/strong> music formats &#8221; MP3, WAV, WMF.<\/p>\n<p>The son and his friends don&#8217;t mind, they&#8217;ve moved on to the next big thing-streaming<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music Hose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Streaming will grow at the rate of 95 percent over the next six years and, according to ABI Research, is going to &#8216;explode.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-demise-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7947\" title=\"mobile-music-streaming-subscribers-world-market-forecast\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/music-demise-7-520x501.jpg\" alt=\"music-industry-world-market-forecast\" width=\"520\" height=\"501\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Streaming Explodes\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>While the number of streaming music subscribers won&#8217;t knock you back on your heels, it does look impressive when you graph it out using just the right scale.\u00a0\u00a0Streaming will gain momentum as people move from the need to &#8216;own&#8217; the music to simply enjoying it in the here and now.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Source\u00a0&#8211; ABI Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By 2016, they say streaming will have more than 161 million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>But keep in mind that the planet has more than 7 billion people, so that&#8217;s a pretty small explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Today, kids just have more to do &#8212; play games, watch music videos, listen to music, move in\/out of Facebook, text.<\/p>\n<p>Bands and artists have found that the new online sites\/tools are great for forming direct relationships with their fans.\u00a0\u00a0They&#8217;re monetizing the relationships with things like tickets to live shows, merchandise and fan clubs.<\/p>\n<p>While the RIAA sues their fans, the artists talk to them &#8211; seems to work better.<\/p>\n<p>The industry knows their future is in the cloud.\u00a0\u00a0They just can&#8217;t figure out how they make the same amount of money.<\/p>\n<p>The new purveyors say the label&#8217;s problem is greed, stupidity (or more kindly, shortsightedness), bad will.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Wrong!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The problem is everyone has a silo mentality.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone wants his\/her &#8216;unfair share&#8217; in his\/her silo.<\/p>\n<p>Someone has to tell &#8217;em,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Folks it ain&#8217;t workin!&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Music piracy and digital music put an end to the RIAA members&#8217; silver disc cash cow.<\/p>\n<p>People are finding new ways to listen to their content and they like it.\u00a0\u00a0They don&#8217;t want eight songs wrapped around the two they really want-they want the specific songs.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not\u00a0<strong><em>just<\/em><\/strong> a bunch of the content; it&#8217;s the listeners&#8217; experience.<\/p>\n<p>Studios have to understand musicians like reaching out, delivering the experience, making a living.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Elena emphasized,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Just take my word for it.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It means labels and the rest have to figure out licensing agreements that are best for everyone &#8211; including the listener.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer simply doesn&#8217;t care about &#8216;them.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0They want to listen to music that is relevant right now on the device they have at the time.<\/p>\n<p>They need to agree on something that works for the artist and the consumer &#8211; regardless of the platform or device.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t care how the services compensate each other whether we buy it, rent it or stream it.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t like it?\u00a0\u00a0Remember what Buddy said at the end of his last concert,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Thank you, Clearlake!
