style=\"color: #000000;\">Creative artists, more than any other personality type, have a strong orientation towards authenticity.\u00a0 They can smell trickery and b.s. from a mile away.\u00a0 Ask them to write out a list of their least favorite people in the world and you\u2019ll likely find politicians, and people who\u2019ve achieved outward success through slimy tactics.\u00a0 One group in particular that often finds itself on the other end of the righteous contempt of the musician are those known as salespeople.\u00a0 Slimy, conniving, dishonest,\u00a0 terrible, evil, ugly salespeople.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s no wonder why so many musicians are so bad at selling.\u00a0 It\u2019s my contention that a high percentage of independent artists harbor negative feelings about selling and disempowering beliefs about money.\u00a0 Often, musicians unconsciously avoid doing things that would make them money because they don\u2019t like the way that it feels to sell.\u00a0 It\u2019s as if by becoming good at selling their music and products they\u2019d have to, on some level, identify themselves in the same category as a sneaky, soulless, greedy salesperson who\u2019s just out to make a buck.\u00a0 Most seem to be OK with the idea of selling music and merch, just so long as they\u2019re not the ones doing the actual selling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What I\u2019m here to say is that it\u2019s time to examine some of this unconscious association and to take a good look at your own beliefs and how they affect you.\u00a0 How do you feel when you try to sell your music or tickets to a show?\u00a0 How do you feel when you tell people about the merch that you have for sale when you\u2019re on stage?\u00a0 Are you spending time and effort on being able to sell more effectively or would you rather avoid it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can be extremely talented and do a lot of things right, but if you\u2019re holding onto a subconscious belief that you\u2019re somehow being wrong by selling yourself and your product then you\u2019re going to be fighting yourself the whole way.\u00a0 You\u2019ll keep trying to find the elusive \u2018next step\u2019 and you\u2019ll never really be sure why you\u2019re not making as much progress as you feel like you should.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So aside from all the judgements and past experiences and projections, what is sales, really?\u00a0 Well essentially it\u2019s just bridging the gap between people and the things that they want or need.\u00a0 Nothing wrong with that, right?\u00a0 Our perception is often spoiled by entry level salespeople in mediocre retail outlets.\u00a0 Good sales people are excellent listeners.\u00a0 Good salespeople actually care about their customers and look to take care of them and their needs.\u00a0 It\u2019s an honorable and fulfilling profession when done with the right spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Virtually all public performing musicians are salespeople whether they realize it or not.\u00a0 What I\u2019d like to see is more of them becoming GOOD sales people who deliver value fairly and profit from it without apology.\u00a0 Do your fans want shirts with your logo on them?\u00a0 Then have them printed up and sell them!\u00a0 Would your fans gladly pay $5 extra for autographed CDs?\u00a0 Do it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Money is fuel for your fire.\u00a0 Money can help you make a better sounding CD.\u00a0 Money can be used to help you assemble a team that will take you to the next level.\u00a0 Money can buy you advertising.\u00a0 Money can help you give your fans more of what they want.\u00a0 It\u2019s OK to make money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you\u2019re playing a show where you get to keep 100% of the door, then charge a fair price.\u00a0 I\u2019d glady pay $10 or $15 for a good show and contribute to a band that I like rather than get in for free and see a band I like flounder around and die a slow and painful death over the course of the next five years because they never have any money to do anything.\u00a0 Your fans want to see you succeed and they want to be a part of getting you there.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let them down by selling yourself short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s naive to think that it would be easy to reverse a lifetime of programming, associations and feelings that you may have in the area of sales and money.\u00a0 The key though is that once you become aware of something unconscious that\u2019s not serving you, you can begin to do something about it.\u00a0 Personally I had to, against all likelihood, actually become a sales person to change my own beliefs.\u00a0 You might want to pick up a copy of \u201cSecrets of the Millionaire Mind\u201d by T.
