Sometimes such campaigns succeed; sometimes they backfire. Let\u2019s take a look at these cases and try to see what they did right and wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Court TV<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/billboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5464\" title=\"billboard\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/billboard-520x289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHi Steven,\u201d it began, cheerily enough. \u201cDo I have your attention now? I know all about her, you dirty, sneaky, immoral, unfaithful, poorly endowed slimeball. Everything\u2019s caught on tape. Your (soon-to-be-ex) Wife, Emily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is a vengeful Dear John letter, blown up on a billboard in the middle of Manhattan by a furious and apparently deep-pocketed spouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More than a million people visited the Emily blog afterward. A fake surveillance video on the blog, supposedly from a private eye capturing Steven holding hands with his paramour, hit YouTube and became one of its most-viewed videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The good:<\/strong> most of the people felt deceived by the campaign but most of them say they don\u2019t mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forgetting Sarah Marshall <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/mom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5450\" title=\"mom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/mom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Do you remember the \u201cForgetting Sarah Marshall\u201d campaign 2 years ago? There was a series of snarky, hand-scrawled advertisements on the sides of buses, subway platforms and telephone booths that targeted somebody named Sarah Marshall. Months before the release of the film, viral marketers put up a series of cryptic advertisements and started a blog, Ihatesarahmarshall.com, which purports to be the actual blog of Sarah\u2019s bitter ex-boyfriend, Peter Bretter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The bad: <\/strong>Well, it&#8217;s really not that bad (actually, it&#8217;s still good for the film&#8217;s publicity). It&#8217;s just that a girl named Sarah Marshall from Glendora complained. &#8220;They&#8217;re everywhere, and they&#8217;re so annoying,&#8221; said Sarah, who lives three blocks from one of the billboards. Adults called her parents to ask if she was the target of a hate campaign. &#8220;I wish they specified that it&#8217;s a movie,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/2.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5451\" title=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"380\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/07\/24\/business\/media\/24billboard.html?_r=3&amp;n=Top%2FReference%2FTimes%20Topics%2FPeople%2FB%2FBosman%2C%20Julie&amp;oref=slogin&amp;oref=slogin\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[NY Times]<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vampire Weekend- Contra<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/contra-cover.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5456\" title=\"contra-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/contra-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"450\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Look at that. It\u2019s just like an old polaroid photo from your mom\u2019s treasure box. This CD packaging for Vampire Weekend&#8217;s Contra created a buzz. The polaroid photo of this anonymous woman was seen everywhere- in their concerts, their website, everywhere! They want people to get intrigued by their effortless\u00a0 album artwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Ugly: <\/strong>This is actually a picture of 80-90s image model Ann Kirsten Kennis and ,apparently, the band used it without permission. Kennis was flattered at first but then she realized how improper it is for the band to use her picture.<em>\u201cWho do these people think they are that they can just take my picture from god only knows where and plaster it everywhere?\u201d<\/em>.
