If you are a metal band, it’s okay to be in the Seventeen Magazine (Hey! Publicity is publicity!) but it’s great to be in Revolver, Spin, or at least FHM. But being featured in a magazine with no Metal music enthusiasts would just be a waste of time, money, and effort. It would be like selling clothes in a Nudist community.

Get a pen and paper and make a list of the top magazines and blogs that you’d love your band to be featured. Don’t be scared to write down Billboard. Be ambitious! Afterward, make a list of the magazines and blogs that you think would entertain new musicians like you. Then, make another list for the other music-related or non-music related magazines that might feature you or your album (our site that reviews album artwork, for example).

Tap your contacts. Now that you’ve written down every magazine and blog that you know, it’s about time you check your email and cellphone for possible people that can help you. Do not send a mass e-mail. Instead, compose each one an e-mail with a personal touch. You are asking for a favour so you better get intimate! Say “ Hi Don, How are you doing? Blah blah…Listen, you worked for X Magazine, right? Is there a chance that they’d feature us? Blah blah…”. Be friendly but be clear of the main intention of your e-mail.

Prepare your Press Materials. Ready your band’s high-resolution photos and press materials like your band’s Bio, gigs, etc. so you have something to hand over to them. These people are busy people and you do not want to cause delays just because you contacted them without preparing a solid press kit. Make sure you include your contact details and your website URL in each page so that they can contact you easily.

After that, all you have to do is wait and keep contacting people. Getting media attention is not easy so you have to be more patient and determined. Keep promoting your band’s website, keep practicing your music, and work on building good relationships with other people while you’re waiting.
