Without a doubt, Covid has been affecting our everyday life, and there is no denying that it also has greatly affected the music industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I mean…<\/p>\n

Damn, don’t we all miss concerts? There aren’t even music in cafes anymore because they’re all closed!<\/p>\n

But as they all say…the show must go on. Or the music industry must go on…and the people must eat! The industry is made up of human beings like us so in order to survive this seemingly never-ending pandemic, the music industry has to adapt and change.<\/p>\n

Here is a list of the top 10 ways the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the music industry (probably for good):<\/p>\n

#1 INCREASE IN VINYL SALES<\/b><\/h3>\n

As of 2018, vinyl sales have been continuously increasing. However, last year\u2019s vinyl sales figure was the first time it surpassed CD sales. This may have been because of the people\u2019s changing preferences since the pandemic has started.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has made busy people rediscover vinyls. In the UK, there was also a 10% increase in vinyl sales even if physical album stores were shut down most of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

#2 REVIVAL OF CASSETTE TAPES<\/b><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Vinyl records<\/a> were not the only format to gain something from the pandemic. Cassette tapes were also helped by the pandemic as it pushed newer generations to discover and older generations to rediscover the format.<\/p>\n

In the UK, 156, 542 tapes were sold which surpassed 2003’s sales and showed an increase of 94.7% on 2019’s sales. In addition, many known artists have released their 2020 albums in the format, like Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, and more.<\/p>\n

#3 BOOM OF MUSIC STREAMING SITES<\/b><\/h3>\n

Even if there is a data increase in online streaming sites\u2019 users and music streaming what\u2019s really important is the number of increasing paid subscribers. This is where such streaming sites can gain high revenue. Last year\u2019s first quarter saw an increase in online subscriptions with a 70% year-over-year increase in online music subscriptions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Spotify, world\u2019s most used streaming site reported a 31% increase in last year\u2019s first quarter from 2019\u2019s first quarter. This shows that even though streams are lesser, people\u2019s want to pay for a music streaming site\u2019s subscription is still there.<\/span><\/p>\n

#4 INCREASE IN ONLINE RADIO STREAMS<\/b><\/h3>\n

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, radio stations have seen an upward trend. This means that in the midst of wanting to hear music, they still want to be informed of the outbreak\u2019s updates. <\/span><\/p>\n

BBC reported a streaming increase of 18%<\/a> in their radio properties. Moreover, iHeart Radio, one of US\u2019 radio conglomerates, also showed an increase in their digital metrics. There was a 30%, 22% and 20% increase in iHeart Radio\u2019s usage in smart speakers, smart television apps, and websites, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

#5 RELEASE OF COVID-19 INSPIRED SONGS<\/b><\/h3>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic did not only affect the music industry, it has also inspired artists to make music about it. There were songs that were made to induce laughter, some to bring hope, some to elevate feelings, some to remind, and some to encourage following protocols and rules. <\/span><\/p>\n

For now there are already 79 songs recorded to have been inspired by the pandemic. Two of which are from well known pop artists of this generation, one is Folklore\u2019s Epiphany by Taylor Swift and the other is the single Nobody\u2019s Love by Maroon 5.<\/span><\/p>\n

#6 ONLINE CONCERTS<\/b><\/h3>\n

Mass gatherings have been banned by the majority of the world\u2019s countries because of the communicable COVID-19 virus. Subsequently, the music industry has to adapt and develop a new way to curb the downward curve of music revenue caused by the cancellation of live performances and concerts. <\/span><\/p>\n

One way they found was to offer online concerts to fans and it has been utilized by many artists right now. There is even an ongoing list of online concert schedules made by Billboard.<\/span><\/p>\n

#7 “FAND PODS” FOR CONCERTS<\/b><\/h3>\n

Another was found by the music industry is the so-called \u201cfan pods\u201d. Pod seating is a strategy that helps bands and venues follow the social distancing protocol imposed by the authorities. This enables a group of people to buy tickets, be seated together in a pod, and be separated from other groups of people. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first concert done this way was made possible by Live Nation for Travis McCready live show in Arkansas. In that concert, fans were not only asked to be socially distant from others, they also had to wear face masks.<\/span><\/p>\n

#8 DRIVE-IN CONCERTS<\/b><\/h3>\n

The last solution they could think of to bring back live concerts and shows was the drive-in concerts. In this set up, fans will have to pay an amount for one car. The car could be theirs or a rented Uber one. This solution does not only help the artists\u2019 gather their fans for a live performance without disobeying social distancing protocols, it also helps the Uber community to have income. <\/span><\/p>\n

If for example, a fan doesn\u2019t want to drive because they for sure know that it would be energy-draining, then they can just contact an Uber and have the driver drive you home after.<\/span><\/p>\n

#9 <\/b>INSTAGRAM LIVE MUSIC BATTLES<\/b><\/h3>\n

Since the pandemic, digital metrics have been soaring high. Since people are told to stay home, they have become very active in social media platforms. Even busy music artists have time to spare for it. Since last year, Instagram lives have been utilized for making live music battles possible. Verzuz, produced by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, made the most buzz for this Instagram live music battle.<\/span><\/p>\n

#10 LIVESTREAMS<\/b><\/h3>\n

Nowadays there are many platforms where artists can go live and perform their pieces. These platforms I’m talking about are: Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, Zoom, Discord, and more. With these platforms, all they need to do is turn on their cameras for their livestreams and they’re all set.<\/p>\n

They can do their thing like singing, dj-ing, etc, without much of a hassle. Livestream is the replacement for those live shows or gigs these musicians do in bars and other venues.<\/p>\n
