For the more technologically savvy, there are digital downloads and streaming. For the Luddites, there are CDs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/products\/custom-cassette\">custom cassette tapes<\/a> (though finding machines that play the latter can be a bit problematic).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">With all of these choices, why would a Millennial buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/vinyl-pressing\/\">vinyl record pressing in LA<\/a>? As someone who qualifies as a Millennial\u2014I\u2019m on the older end of the spectrum\u2014here are six reasons I can think of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Status<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">We should probably get this one out of the way now: Some Millennials buy vinyl because other Millennials buy vinyl. It\u2019s the high school mentality\u2014boys and girls want to sit at the cool kids\u2019 table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">I imagine that some older readers are already firing off one of those oh-so-enlightening spiels about the kids nowadays. I would invite these fine folks to meditate on their own dubious aesthetic choices of yesteryear (Ultra-wide-collar shirts, anyone? Pet rocks? \u201cDisco Duck?\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Done? Good. Let\u2019s move on\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Sound<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">People talk about how vinyl sounds \u201cwarmer\u201d or more vivid than digital files or CDs do. To some extent, this is subjective. It also depends on recording and mastering, the quality of your speakers and so on. My point is that Millennials like vinyl for the same reason Baby Boomers and Gen X-ers do: They like the sound of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Art<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Mark Richardson put it very nicely in a 2013 op-ed for\u00a0<i>Pitchfork<\/i>. Vinyl LPs, he wrote, \u201care beautiful objects and CDs have always looked like plastic office supplies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Records and record covers can be works of art in themselves. I once bought an old copy of Al Green\u2019s 1973 album\u00a0<i>Livin\u2019 for You<\/i>. I\u2019ve never actually played it\u2014the record\u2019s not in the best shape and I already had it on CD\u2014but boy, it\u2019s cool just to have the cover in 12\u201d x 12\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">If you haven\u2019t seen or heard\u00a0<i>Livin\u2019 for\u00a0<\/i>You\u2014a great album, by the way\u2014the cover\u2019s a painting of Green standing in what looks like fire with a golden, feminine arm handing him a rose. I\u2019ll let you ponder the psychological implications of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Nostalgia<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">For some Millennials, vinyl could bring back childhood memories. I can remember looking through my parents\u2019 record collection when I was younger. They actually had a copy of\u00a0<i>The Velvet Underground and Nico<\/i>\u00a0(they\u2019d peeled part of the banana and taped it back in place). They also had three copies of\u00a0<i>Born to Run<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Guilty Pleasures<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In this age of kitsch and irony, used vinyl can be a godsend. One time, I bought a copy of Don Johnson\u2019s 1986 album\u00a0<i>Heartbeat<\/i>\u00a0for 99 cents. The music hasn\u2019t aged very well, but I figured it\u2019d make a fantastic white elephant gift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">I ended up giving it to a twenty-something friend for Christmas. He was quite amused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">(Sidenote: Look up the credits for\u00a0<i>Heartbeat<\/i>\u00a0sometime. You\u2019ll be amazed at who plays on it.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Hidden Treasures<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">At the same time, if you\u2019re a Millennial of discerning taste, you can find some amazing stuff for ridiculously cheap. I once found a copy of\u00a0<i>Lefty Frizzell Sings the Songs of Jimmie Rodgers<\/i>\u00a0in good condition for only $2.50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">_________________________________________<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>James Hill<\/i><\/b><i> is a veteran of the music industry.
