{"id":16163,"date":"2012-07-06T21:54:42","date_gmt":"2012-07-07T05:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/?p=16163"},"modified":"2021-10-22T07:30:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T07:30:43","slug":"eco-recycle-paper-diy-cd-sleeves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/eco-recycle-paper-diy-cd-sleeves\/","title":{"rendered":"ECO: How to Recycle Paper for your DIY CD Sleeves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To make paper, there are three steps that T&#8217;sai Lun, huge papermaking machines and modern handpaper-makers alike follow.\u00a0 They are: preparing the material from which you will make paper, forming the sheet and drying the sheet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #888888; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><a name=\"What You Need\"><\/a><big><span style=\"font-size: large;\">What You Need<\/span><\/big><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">deckle &#8211; a frame without a screen\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">mould- frame with screen\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/goog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16170\" title=\"goog\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unifiedmanufacturing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/goog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">laundry starch<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">used paper &#8211; should not be glossy or coated.\u00a0 Examples of paper that can be used: computer paper, intermediate pad, typewriting paper, onion skin, coupon bond, envelopes, receipts, office memos, etc.\u00a0 Do not use newspapers as your handmade paper will discolor.\u00a0 Use colored paper to add color.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">bucket of water<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">blender &#8211; Use of the blender is optional.\u00a0 If you do not have a blender, soak torn paper in water for at least one day to soften paper, then pound soaked paper till it disintegrates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">newspapers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">sponge or chamois<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">tub or basin &#8211; Bigger than mould and deckle (with space enough for your hands at the sides).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">mug to transfer water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><a name=\"Basic Instructions\"><\/a><big><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Basic Instructions<\/span><\/big><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">1) Tear paper into pieces about 1\/2&#8243; square.\u00a0 You can also use a paper shredder if you have one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">2) Put torn paper up to 1\/3 full in blender.\u00a0 Add water until 2\/3 full.\u00a0 Blend 2-3 seconds.\u00a0 Repeat until you get the desired consistency.\u00a0 (Paper should become separately frayed fibers.\u00a0 If you want an interesting texture, add dried leaves or thin stalks and blend again.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">3) Pour mixture into tub.\u00a0 (Technical name for this is pulp slurry) Repeat procedure with blender until it is about 4 inches deep or more.\u00a0 (To make thin paper, more water is needed.\u00a0 For paper with thickness of bond paper, 3 grams of pulp for every liter of water is advisable.\u00a0 Experiment!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">4) Add gawgaw to mixture to serve as a binder. (To make gawgaw, use 1 tbsp. of uncooked starch for a tub of water.\u00a0 If you use cooked starch, amount is usually 10% based on the dried weight of the pulp.)\u00a0 You can add pressed leaves or flowers, corn hair, thread, etc. to mixture.\u00a0 Just make sure these are paper thin or else they will not attach to the paper pulp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">5) Hold the mould and deckle firmly together with deckle uppermost and screen in between. \u00a0 Dip into tub and scoop up pulp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">6) Lift frames up and let water drain back into tub.\u00a0 Shake gently to distribute fibers evenly.\u00a0 Continue draining by tipping from one corner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">7) Carefully separate deckle, and lay mould upside down (with the wet pulp on the underside) on a folded sheet of newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">8.) Soak up excess water with sponge or piece of chamois pressed against screen surface. \u00a0 If you are making plenty of sheets, you may pile the sheets with the folded newspaper between them until the time you can lay them out to dry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">9) Slowly separate mould from the sheet.\u00a0 If paper still sticks to mould, this means you need to remove more water with the sponge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">10) Let paper sheets dry for 1\/2 to 1 day.\u00a0 When they dry, you can easily separate them from the newspaper.\u00a0 (To squeeze out water and flatten sheets, you can place the pile of wet paper and newspapers between a couple of boards and top it with a heavy object for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\"><strong><a name=\"Fun Projects to Do\"><\/a>Adding Design to Your Paper<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div>a) To put color in your work, you may either start with recycled colored stock or pour liquid fabric dye into the blender.\u00a0 You can also use vegetable dyes, Rit dye or procion dye.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">b) To put color in your work, you may either start with recycled colored stock or pour liquid fabric dye into the blender.\u00a0 You can also use vegetable dyes, Rit dye or procion dye.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">c) Another way of livening up your paper is by embedding things in your new sheet of paper while it is still wet and on the mould.\u00a0 It can be quite tricky balancing that leaf across the paper but a good arrangement is worth it.\u00a0 You can also put these little add-ons directly to the vat or basin.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">d) Paper will adhere to paper when it is damp, so you can attach two sheets together. \u00a0 Apply pressure at the point of contact.\u00a0 If you want to embed an object which is thick\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">enough to make a bump, you might laminate a second, thinner sheet on top of the object to hold it in place.\u00a0 You can laminate two different colors of paper to get a two-toned effect.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Microsoft Sans Serif';\">e) You can form embossed images by using cookie cutters and different objects (like the dove image at right).\u00a0 Painting them or adding glitter or gold outlines will also give them a unique look.\u00a0 Use as the focal point of your artwork or to accent a picture frame, box or scrapbook cover.\u00a0 Here it is used to spruce up a kraft paper bag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Source: Papemelroti<\/p>\n<p>Good luck on your project!
