Someone once said, \u201cNobody\u2019s cool when you have kids\u201d. Well, these musician moms are here to prove that statement wrong. These musician moms made it possible to continue their careers in music even with the overwhelming challenges of motherhood (not to mention wifehood and breadwinner-hood). Motherhood equals zero sleep, more mouths to feed, life insurance, groceries, routine, and lots of time with the kids. Come to think of it, even full-time moms find it hard to keep their sanity. What more for musician moms?<\/p>\n

Here are some rockin\u2019 female musicians who share the good and the bad of juggling motherhood and music career.<\/p>\n

Panda Delilah, age 4.<\/p>\n

Rewards:<\/strong> She makes up little songs and has a really amazing sense of humor. I love that she wants to make songs with me. We\u2019ve been able to take her to a lot of places and she\u2019s been exposed to a lot of cultures and languages.<\/p>\n

Challenges:<\/strong> The hardest part is making sure that she doesn\u2019t just get swept up in the chaos of touring, and really taking time to figure out how to meet her needs. She\u2019s old enough to start kindergarten next year, but we\u2019re likely going to take the year off of school and tour.<\/p>\n

Rewards:<\/strong> Musician pals make a great village. Everyone feels in on your new person and you know your kid\u2019s life is going to be rich with wing-nuts.<\/p>\n

Challenges:<\/strong> I\u2019m not sure how much hearing I have lost, so when we play \u201cC is for cookie,\u201d is it way too loud?<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Sometimes I wish had more routine and a set schedule in my life. Parenting is always easier that way\u2014kids thrive on routine. But I\u2019m guess I\u2019m teaching them how to be adaptable and flexible.<\/p>\n

Rewards:\u00a0<\/strong>Our house is the band hub for rehearsals, photo shoots, meetings, etc., which means that there are always people coming in and out. My bandmates are Madeleine\u2019s best friends!<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Touring is pretty difficult, but even worse than being away is the inconsistency and instability of it all. One month I\u2019ll be in performance and late-night socializing mode and the next month I\u2019ll be in full-time Mommy mode!\\<\/p>\n

Rewards:\u00a0<\/strong>The best part of being a \u201cmusician mom\u201d is that my children and I sing and play instruments together all the time. I have a little nook by my fireplace where my guitar and ukulele hang on the wall to remind me to play everyday.<\/p>\n

Challenges:<\/strong>\u00a0I want to do it all. And I can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Rewards:\u00a0<\/strong>Getting to do what I love because I love being a mamma. But like all mammas, you kind of want to go out and do something. I get to experience two worlds that are just really spectacular. I get to be a mamma when I\u2019m at home and I get to do this extreme stuff on the other end.<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Leaving home, leaving family and having to explain to my little boy when he says, \u201cWell mamma, why do you have to leave so much?\u201d He does really well with it, but even the smallest little question like that can make you feel so sad.<\/p>\n

Rewards:\u00a0<\/strong>Having a child has made me treat my musical career with more respect. When it was just me, I knew I could get by on very little. Now I work very hard to support my son. If I have to be on the road and away from him, I am absolutely certain that it\u2019ll be worth it.<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0A lot of times being a musician means that I have to spend time away from Nico.<\/p>\n

Rewards:\u00a0<\/strong>The best part of being a musician mama (and this is total bliss) is watching my kids cultivate their own passion for creativity, in a home where there is only nurture for their creative pursuits, like an art incubator.<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Again, you could say the following about any career; replace \u201cmusic\u201d with \u201cpublishing\u201d or \u201cfinance.\u201d The hardest part is that I feel my loyalties being constantly pulled in two directions: humans and work. Also, reviewers seem obsessed with us being \u2018parents that make music,\u2019 and not simply musicians.<\/p>\n

I like sharing my past\u2014songs and photos and videos\u2014with them, although they don\u2019t seem very impressed. Other moms seem to like that I\u2019m a musician.<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0It is nearly impossible for me to tour for any length of time\u2014couple of days at most.<\/p>\n

They see us being creative together and spending our time making music rather than watching TV, and they\u2019ve followed suit. I love feeling like I\u2019ve played some part in encouraging them to pursue their own passions and spend their time meaningfully.<\/p>\n

Challenges:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Touring. The idea of doing more extensive touring is both fantastic and terrifying. I love music and I love my band. But my first commitment is to my children.\u00a0Also, I need more sleep. A\u00a0lot<\/em>\u00a0more sleep.<\/p>\n
