Indie Music Promotion: Nothing still beats the good ol’ E-mail

Yep, no facebook or twitter or myspace could beat the classic medium yet.  According to the study published by eMarketer.com in December of 2009,  email was still the medium that people most used to share.

And I do not question their findings. Personally, I  pay more attention to promotion and marketing that I find in my e-mail than in the overcrowded social networking sites.  I automatically delete those I receive on facebook and I find it really annoying that some businessmen have the nerve to tag me in their product photos just so it would spider out to my friends’ profiles. They should pay us for that! Facebook or twitter, for me, is supposed to be a personal space where I can voice out my opinions, feelings, etc to my friends.

On the other hand, E-mail has a more formal, personal approach that will never give you that feeling that you’re being used or exploited because it’s main reason is for communication and business. So we expect to see lots of marketing emails and it would not bother us. The moment we check our e-mail, we turn on a switch on our brain that makes us more tolerant and even interested to these promotional e-mails.

So how does this fact affect us as musicians and entrepreneurs?

Well, we should not underestimate the capability of the classic mode of communication because majority of the people are more welcoming to these formats than any other online medium. That being said, we should pay more attention to our mailing list. During gigs, pass around a sheet of paper where people can sign-up and send them a follow-up e-mail the moment you can.

Do you still promote your music thru e-mail? Please do share!
