6 Easy Ways to Incorporate Creativity to Your Daily Life

I know lots of creative people who are stuck- either they have jobs  they are least passionate about or they have jobs they love but they’re not really doing something creative. And there are those who are actually in the creative field doing creative work but are not advancing creatively. They have the capacity to do more but they’re well, stuck.

Creative people want to dream, imagine, and most of all- create. But it’s not that easy anymore now that we’re grown ups, is it? Parent’s expectations, bills, future, life. There are things that we MUST do and things we have to set aside. But how long can you set aside your creative pursuits? When life gets easier? But what if it won’t?

You do not have to leave your security in order to become creative. Here are some of the tips I gathered for incorporating creativity to our daily lives. I hope these tips will help us remember- and not just remember, but actually do- the things we are passionate about.

Have a dream journal. I’m sure you’ve had plenty of really awesome dreams that you’ve forgotten. Sometimes we have a dream so vivid when we wake up that we promise ourselves we’d write about it or make a film about it. But then we brush our teeth, take a quick shower, head to the office, become busy..and by nighttime, the dream is not as sweet anymore. Next time, write your dreams down in a journal or blog. Do this for one year and you’ll become more aware, and possibly more imaginative.

Write down ideas. Carry a notepad wherever you go. Some great ideas spark when we’re out and about- when we’re observing the people getting on and off the train, when we’re sitting on the park observing old lovers, etc.  Don’t let another good idea escape.

Have a digital camera handy. This is pretty much the same as the ones mentioned above. You have to capture moments and ideas before they evaporate. There are some things that cannot be written down succinctly and that’s what cameras are for.

Listen to at least 2 new songs a day. Try something different everyday even if it’s just songs. If you’re always listening to classical music, try a bit of triphop today, then Ska tomorrow. It’s always a plus to your creativity if you explore new things. Yes, even if it’s just music.

Free Flow Writing. Write without thinking too much about what you’re writing. Do not pause for one bit- just keep writing for 5 minutes. It doesn’t have to make sense. This exercise is important in order for you to loosen up and unclog writer’s block.

Watch good films, read good books. Find time to do this daily or at least thrice a week. You need to fill your creative bank. It doesn’t matter much whether it’s an art film with subtitles of a cheesy gory flick as long as you do this regularly. Do not be too pressured to watch only the kinds of films you want to make. Just keep watching, just keep learning. Then one day, you’ll be inspired.

I hope you will find the tips above helpful. But you know what, the best advice I got is this: Just do something everyday. Just do something that could lead to what you want. Every single day. It could just be writing in your journal(if you want to be a writer), taking one photograph a day (if you want to be a photographer or filmmaker), learning one trick in photoshop a day (if you want to be a designer),etc. Think of that one thing and do that every single day from now on. So what if you have a fever today, so what if you have deadlines, do it. Rain or shine, sickness or health, richer or poorer, DO IT.

The only thing I would add is trust your instincts, they’re smarter than you know, and let your sub conscious do the heavy lifting, oh, and play with other mediums. A poets eye is very different to a prose writers eye, or a song writers eye, each can inform your work to great effect. The best example I see is in the work of David Mack, he does art, and damn the medium

Thanks Adam. That’s a great tip you got there about playing with other mediums. It would just be like hmmm… playing rubrik’s cube. A little shift here, a little shift there…but it’s still art. I need to check out David Mack. Thanks Adam.
